While no gas conversion project follows the same outline, a general working
process exists that is some what quite predictable. You can usually count on the
conversion process to follow the following conversion steps.
The Customer identifies the need for energy or new gas equipment.
The Customer contacts a HVAC contractor.
The HVAC contractor performs equipment design & specifications, and contacts
direct energy with gas load information.
Enbridge provides the customer or project managers with estimates for the
installation of gas service (if required). If there is an existing gas service,
Direct energy will determine if the pressure, service, regulator and meter are
large enough to meet the extra gas load.
The homeowner or project managers finalizes design based upon Direct Energy
service entrance locations.
The gas contractor sells the gas equipment and furnace to the customer.
Your gas company if required, constructs main gas lines and service connections.
Your HVAC contractor installs gas equipment such as stoves or furnaces.
The gas contractor meets with the gas supplier, inspects the installation and
sets gas metering equipment. Gas service is to be turned on.
Natural gas is known to be environmentally clean.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Because the combustion process
for natural gas is almost perfect, very few by products are released into the
atmosphere as pollutants.
Also, with the introduction of new technologies, nitrogen oxide, a pollutant
targeted by the Clean Air Act can be significantly reduced. The blue flame seen
when natural gas is ignited is a sign of perfect gas combustion.
Because natural gas burns so clean, it doesn't leave behind any unpleasant soot
odors or ash.
Switching to natural gas eliminates the need for an underground storage
tank--eliminating the threat of oil spills, soil contamination and costly
environmental clean-ups.
If the oil tank is above ground, switching to natural gas eliminates worry about
spills or corrosion of the oil tank.
There's no unsightly storage tank to clutter the appearance of the homeowners
property.
Natural gas is non toxic as well. If inhaled in minute amounts, natural gas is
not poisonous or harmful to humans.
Natural gas is truly convenient. The energy source is piped directly to the
customer. This system of delivery is through the safe, efficient piping system.
There's no need to store ugly oil on site in oil tanks, or schedule oil
deliveries.
There is an abundant supply of domestic natural gas in Canada. And as Canadians
we profit.
Natural gas is reliable. The pipeline can not be easily damaged by weather or
affected by winter weather conditions. In contrast, oil must be brought to the
customer by truck. Truck deliveries are can be susceptible to harsh weather
conditions.
An odorant called mercaptan is added to gas by the gas supplier. When the smell
of gas is detected, it lets the homeowner know their is a leak in the gas
system.
