How do Tankless Hot Water Heaters work?

1. When you open a hot water tap, cold water enters the heater and triggers the heating elements or burners. Your hot water tap acts as an ignition key for the energy used to heat the hot water you need. The start-up process only requires a couple of seconds.

2. The water is heated as it flows through the heating elements or heat exchanger. As the water flow varies, the unit adjusts the heating elements or burner flame to maintain a constant temperature and maximum energy efficiency.

3. When the hot water tap is turned off, the heating system also turns off. (excluding the pilot if so equipped)

Can a home owner install a tankless hot water heater?

We would not recommend a home owner to install their own tankless hot water heater. Tankless water heaters have strict venting codes that is best installed by a professional H.V.A.C company with certified technicians. Most of these units require direct (through the wall) venting with clearance regulations. Unit efficiency can greatly be decreased by insufficient/improper venting. With gas on demand hot water heaters, gas piping and water pipes most often need to be increased and well as safety valves and electrical safeties are required.

Should I buy my tankless hot water heater, then call an installer?

If you decide to purchase a hot water heater from a source other than your installer, you may be faced with warranty issues. Also, all required parts for a full installation, sufficient venting, pipe upgrading and safeties are not usually included when purchasing a unit. Most installers insist on supplying dealer brand units with their installations. This will benefit you, the homeowner, as installers are specifically trained for the brand they install and if required, there will be no warranty issues with parts under manufacturers' warranty.

Direct Electronic Ignition- No standing pilot.

Fully Automatic Controls- Outgoing water temperature is monitored by a built-in sensor. Burner and combustion blower modulate between minimum and maximum input to maintain set point temperature. If the temperature of the water exceeds 6 degrees above the set point temperature the burner will shut down. The burner will ignite once outgoing water temperature falls below the set point.

Diagnostic Controls- Error messages in numerical codes are displayed on primary control.

Cut Energy Waste- Models only run when there is a demand for hot water.
