What Happens When and if You Receive a Red Tag From Enbridge, TSSA or a Licensed Ontario Gas Technician in Toronto? A red tag warning comes in 2 types of of notices. There is warning tag type A and warning tag type B. Warning tags are given when an issue with your property has been found to be unsafe. You can recieve a red tag warning from you gas supplier, Enbridge gas utility, or a local licensed gas fitter with a TSSA certified gas fitter. The reason you would receive a red tag warning could be because of a gas leak, carbon monoxide leak or venting issues. These are just a few reason you may get your furnace redtagged or water heater etc. Red Tag Warnings can be issued by gas utility providers such as Enbridge or Licensed Gas Fitter Technicians upon inspecting an unsafe gas appliance that no longer safe to operate due to the chance of Carbon Monoxide Leaks or CO. The warnings tags are put in place to ensure the health & safety of the building residents in residential or commercial properties. Warning tag type A ? Gas warning tags or (Red Tags) are to be taken seriously. Type A red tag warning is issued when there is imminent danger and requires repair now not later. Any TSSA License Gas Technician , is required by law to tag an appliance regardless of the reason of the visit. Example, if a licensed contractor comes to fix the water heater, they may see reason to tag the Furnace. Type (A) Warning Tags, your gas is not closed off and you have up to 45 days to have the it repaired or replaced before your homes gas supply will be shut off. TSSA codes change from time to time so an equipment installation may have been up to code when it was installed years ago but it may no longer be up to the safety standard of new TSSA codes from earlier . If you receive a (type A Warning Tag) for your gas equipment not being safe to operate, it is best to not wait until the last minute to have the appliances brought up to code. If you do not bring your residence up to code within the period that is given by the warning tag, Enbridge gas will shut off your supply of natural gas to your home for failure to comply with their said requirements. TSSA Enbridge Red Tag Warning Category (B) RED tag warning B , is put on a furnace or other gas appliances because it is in unacceptable condition. It is usually a 45 day warning to get the equipment back in safe operating condition. Type B red tags are issued when the licensed TSSA gas technician finds that the appliances are unacceptable for shape but they do not pose an immediate safety hazard. It also has a time line for the repair, usually set at 45 days from the time the B tag was issued. If the owner fails to show proof of the repairs to Enbridge company before the deadline will result in the homes gas supply to the appliance being shut down. A typical tag with these warnings. In compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act and its Regulations, a warning tag has been applied to your gas appliance or related work. Warning Tag Category “A” – Appliance or Work is an Immediate Hazard When a certified gas technician finds that an appliance or work is in an unacceptable condition that constitutes an immediate hazardous situation, he or she must immediately shut off the supply of gas to the appliance or work, complete this tag, affix it to the appliance or work, and send a copy so that Enbridge Gas Distribution receives it within 14 days. This tag serves as notice that the appliance or work to which it is affixed must not be used or operated until the noted unsafe conditions have been corrected and the appliance or work is compliant with all safety regulations. Appliances can only be re-activated by a certified licensed gas technician after they are satisfied the unsafe conditions have been corrected and the appliance or work is compliant with all safety regulations. It is your responsibility to ensure corrections are made by a certified gas technician. Please consult your telephone directory or internet to find a certified gas technician (heating contractor) working in your area to correct the unacceptable conditions. Once corrections are made, the licensed gas technician must complete the “Work Completed By” portion of this tag (the “clearance”) and immediately mail it, or scan and e-mail it to Enbridge Gas Distribution (e-mail addresses and mailing address at bottom of this form). This portion of the tag must clearly show the name of the certified gas technician that corrected the condition, their signature, address, phone number, and certificate number. Enbridge is required to inspect the appliance or work that was tagged if this information is missing or unclear and a service charge may be levied against you for this activity. Warning Tag Category “B” – Appliance or Work Does NOT Constitute an Immediate Hazard When a certified gas technician finds that an appliance or work is in an unacceptable condition but does not constitute an immediate hazard, he or she must complete this tag and affix it to the appliance or work, and send a copy so that Enbridge Gas Distribution receives it within 14 days. This tag serves as notice that the appliance or work to which it is affixed can be used or operated, but that the unacceptable condition must be corrected, and it must be compliant with all safety regulations before the expiry date noted on this tag. It is your responsibility to ensure corrections are made by the expiry date noted on this tag. It is illegal for the tagged appliance to be used beyond the expiry date shown on the tag if the corrections have not been made. Enbridge is required to shut off the gas supply to the tagged appliance or work if it does not receive notice that the unacceptable conditions have been corrected by the expiry date (i.e. the “Work Completed By” portion of this tag the clearance . If Enbridge cannot gain access to the appliance or work, Enbridge will shut off the gas supply to the entire premises. Appliances can only be re-activated by a certified gas technician after he/she is satisfied the unsafe conditions have been corrected and the appliance or work is compliant with all safety regulations. Please consult your telephone directory or the internet to find a certified gas technician (heating contractor) working in your area to correct the unacceptable conditions. Once corrections are made, the certified gas technician must complete the “Work Completed By” portion of this tag (the “clearance”) and immediately mail it, or scan and e-mail it to Enbridge Gas Distribution (e-mail addresses and mailing address at bottom of this form). This portion of the tag must be received by Enbridge no less than five (5) business days prior to the expiry date in order to allow for processing. A service charge may be levied against you if Enbridge does not receive the tag within this time. This portion of the tag must clearly show the name of the certified gas technician that corrected the condition, their signature, address, phone number and certificate number. Enbridge is required to inspect the appliance or equipment that was tagged if this information is missing or unclear and a service charge may be levied against you for this activity.
